go fish

These are the old fish in their fish tank. The orange one is still with me. The new fish are being difficult subjects to photograph.

I think that you do lose the sense of intimacy when you move the fish from a bowl to a tank, and that fish tanks are in general pretty ugly furniture. I had a fish that lived a good few years in a bowl, and would probably still be alive if he hadn't been taken out by a heat wave.

One thing I wouldn't have thought of when buying fish is the set up I saw at the pet store where I got my fish with the long (single) tail - it was pond-like, in that there were a few brightly coloured fish, and some other more neutral, beige-ish fish. I think they were shibukin, cordyline, and overgrown feeder fish. As opposed to adorable fancy golfish. You can also get different coloured light bulbs so that the doesn't have a blue-ish alien-esque glow.

I think I've decided to just be a jerk about it, get a tank that fits my living space (but is smaller than the 20 gallon monstrosity recommended for two fancy goldfish) and at least give Soren and Martin some more breathing room.

You can always reevaluate in a few years if Soren and Martin appear on their way to becoming gigantic five pound marvels, right? Will you post a photo of them?

I will, once I get the tank set up. should take me about a week (hope! hope!) to get them in their new home.
